Ah, the Fourth of July is a time of family celebration, swimming, and summertime fun. There is no better time to share my idea of sandwich perfection, a delightful topping that holds a special place in my heart.
Hailing from the hills of West Virginia, this extraordinary condiment would grace the tables of our summer cookouts. When cookouts were planned at Happy Hollow Lake with friends and family, someone would ask my mom to bring this recipe. Those cookouts were usually followed by a baseball game with family members of all ages; then, the kids would enjoy a swim in the lake.
This heavenly accompaniment is for more than burgers and brats; it is perfect on a grilled pork chop and takes hot dogs to a new level. Yes, this topping, my friend, knows no bounds.
And fear not, for the creation of this dish is as simple as it is divine. Mix the sauce first to combine the flavors, then add the cabbage and onion. If time permits, you may wish to mix this up a day ahead to allow the flavors to come together for a dish that will surely be requested in the future.
EVERYTHING RECIPE
- 3/4 cup Mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 Tablespoon Yellow Prepared Mustard (enough to make it yellow)
- 1 small head of cabbage grate or shred fine
- 1/2 cup onion chopped fine
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
Mix mayonnaise, sugar, and mustard. Fold in cabbage and onion. Add salt and pepper, taste, and adjust as necessary. It should stick together but not be runny. It needs to be sweet and yellow in color.
Enjoy with burgers, brats, hot dogs, pork loin sandwiches, and more!
