I Love Learning, Creating, and Figuring Things Out

Hi, I’m Lisa — and Spoon River Savvy is where I share the things I’ve picked up through hobbies, work, and everyday life.

My dad always told me I could do anything, and that belief stuck. I’m not a perfectionist, but I am curious. I like trying new things, figuring them out as I go, and learning from the mistakes just as much as the successes. I’ve never been short on interests — something I still credit to my years in 4-H, where trying a little bit of everything was encouraged.

Baking (and Cooking) from Scratch

Cooking is something I enjoy, but baking truly has my heart. Friends and coworkers know I rarely show up empty-handed. I learned so much watching my grandma and mother cook from scratch. I prefer homemade when it comes to pie crust, cake, bread, noodles beef vegetable soup and more.

Lately, I’ve been having fun creating unique cakes and experimenting with flavors — always from scratch. Some favorites include rich chocolate cake with raspberry filling and white buttercream, classic butter cake, bright lemon desserts, chocolate pudding cake, and maple bourbon cake. Baking is part creativity, part science, and always something meant to be shared.

A Little Tech, A Little Geeky

I’ll admit — I enjoy technology. I like learning new tools and figuring out how technology can make life more organized, efficient, and fun. While I’m proficient at the computer, I also picked up journaling this past year.  I’m on a quest to figure out the best fountain pen and paper.   I was intrigued when I learned that handwriting improves learning.

Switching from Windows computers to a Mac came with a learning curve, but with persistence (and plenty of YouTube), I discovered that most things are figure-out-able. I’m a big fan of Microsoft OneNote and enjoy sharing ways it can be used to stay organized. I’ve also spent a lot of time learning the ins and outs of website creation — from choosing a name and hosting to managing content and shaping what this space would become.

Why Spoon River Savvy?

Spoon River Savvy is a place to share what I’m learning — practical tips, creative projects, and everyday discoveries. I wanted a website that’s easy to read and easy to enjoy — no pop-ups, no clutter, and no unnecessary distractions. Just helpful content, shared simply, without a bunch of malarkey in the way.

If I’ve figured something out, I like to pass it on. If you enjoy learning new things, trying new ideas, or seeing how someone else works through the process, you’re in the right place.
